Santa Clara University’s School of Engineering has announced a new Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence (MSAI) program, starting in Fall 2025. The goal is to prepare students for real-world AI careers while promoting ethical responsibility.
As AI continues to shape our world, there is growing demand for professionals who can create and manage AI technologies responsibly. Santa Clara’s MSAI program answers this need with a practical, hands-on approach and two focus areas:
- Computer Science and Engineering (CSEN) for students interested in software and algorithms.
- Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECEN) for those focusing on hardware, embedded systems, robotics, and chip design.
Program Highlights
- Strong foundation in math, ethics, and professional development
- Core courses in machine learning, deep learning, and reinforcement learning
- Specialized electives for each concentration
- Final project (AI practicum) done with industry or research partners in Silicon Valley
Dean Kendra Sharp says the program is unique because it blends advanced tech skills with ethics and real-world experience. Students will graduate ready to lead in AI fields while using technology for good.
Yi Fang, a professor and director of SCU’s Responsible AI initiative, adds that students will not only master technical skills but also understand the social impact of AI.
The MSAI program is supported by both the Computer Science and Engineering and Electrical and Computer Engineering departments. It is part of SCU’s Impact 2030 plan, which focuses on ethical innovation and teamwork across disciplines.
Graduates will be ready to work in fields like healthcare, energy, finance, and transportation, equipped to innovate responsibly and with a strong ethical foundation inspired by Jesuit values.
