Every May 1st, the world comes together to recognize the efforts, struggles, and achievements of workers. International Workers’ Day, also known as Labour Day, is more than a holiday—it’s a powerful reminder of the rights every worker is entitled to, and the role we all play in building fair and just workplaces.
The International Labour Organization (ILO)—the global authority on labor standards—has long championed the rights of workers. According to the ILO, every worker, in every country, deserves:
-
Fair Wages: You should be paid enough to live with dignity. A fair day’s pay for a fair day’s work isn’t a privilege—it’s a right.
-
Safe Work Environments: No job should put your life or health at risk. Safety at work is non-negotiable.
-
Reasonable Working Hours: You deserve time for rest, family, and life beyond work. Exploitation has no place in modern labor.
-
Freedom to Form Unions: Your voice matters. Workers must be free to organize, bargain collectively, and stand together.
-
No Forced or Child Labor: All work must be freely chosen and free of coercion. Children belong in schools, not in factories.
-
Access to Social Protection: From healthcare to unemployment benefits, workers should have a safety net when they need it most.
Today is a reminder: You deserve dignity, justice, and fair treatment at work—every day of the year.
Let’s stand in solidarity and continue striving for decent work for all.
Happy Workers’ Day!
